NACE Skills-Revised 2019 Classes

GPS Class-Skill: Critical Thinking/Problem Solving-Teamwork/Collaboration

• Throughout this semester we have mainly been focused on planning on fundraisers and with this we have ran into different struggles and stumbling blocks. This class has allowed me to learn how to deal with conflict head on. It has also really taught me to have patience and how to work with others more efficiently in a group. There were times where not all people would participate when necessary which allowed for some frustration, but it taught me how to get back on track without letting it bother me too much. This overall project and group effort have made me also really appreciate other people’s ideas. This is something that has been extremely tough through the semester, but I think that now all of us are beginning to learn from it. And for me personally, I think that I have learned patience, how to work with others and how to deal with conflict throughout planning this project. This will be useful in the workplace one day if I ever must do a group project of some sort of just communicating with my co-workers in general. It is important to have good people skills, especially with those whom you are working with. Teamwork and Collaboration is another one that was huge in that class that ties into everything that I have already mentioned. This will help in the workplace when I meet new people and am learning to work with others.

• English Comp 105-Skill: Written Communication/Digital Technology

• The skill of written communication has been thoroughly used for me, throughout this English class. I have learned how to express my feelings and my past through words that I write/type down on a sheet of paper. Not only am I doing this for a grade, but it is also a great way to type out your feelings to release them one way or another. Over the entire semester we have been working on one paper and I am currently doing mine on single parenting. This is where my written communication has come in the most. I can express my past and my experiences through communicating with my professor through the paper that I am writing. I have learned that it does not always have to be in first person for someone to understand that I am writing from personal experience. From the knowledge that I am writing this paper with it would be easy for a person to observe that this is something I witnessed and experienced growing up. This is also a place where I can work with digital technology because this class is solely based off doing online assignments and typing papers and such. This skill will also be useful someday in the workplace because of how technologically advanced the world is becoming. Communication skills will be helpful in the workplace someday also when I need to communicate feelings through an email or in a potential meeting that I may encounter.

NACE Skills Reflection 2018

• Skill #1 – Critical Thinking/Problem Solving

• Within our Comedy Central Civics class, I have been given the opportunity to figure out which political party I would consider myself to be put under. The assignment that really allowed me to figure this out was the paper we wrote on a certain political party and dug deeper into the meaning and beliefs behind each party. This opened my eyes to the republican party, democratic party, and the green party. These were all things that I had never had much knowledge of until I had written this paper. Critical thinking has played a huge role into this for me because for me to decipher which party I would consider myself to be apart of, I need to critically think and use a form of analyzation. If I had not taken time to do this essay, I would not have such a strong understanding of political parties. It led me towards deciding, as well as interpreting and using the knowledge that I had and the facts that I had been given.

• Skill #2 – Oral/Written Communications

• Within my English Comp 100 class I have been able to practice many different communication and oral skills. The first example that I have from this class is the very first paper we had written. We must analyze a song and we needed to present our information orally to our professor. This challenged my oral skills and made me realize that I am not very nervous about public speaking which was very reassuring for myself. The paper that we are currently working on is an argumentative paper. This has really allowed me to work with my written communications skills because I have never really written a paper that involved such a strongly based argument before. This has allowed me to gain better knowledge and understanding behind how to effectively grab the audience’s attention through what I am communicating to them. Because of this class I can articulate my thoughts better and put what I am thinking down onto paper with my ideas.

• Skill #3 – Leadership

• After my English Class every Friday I also take a Writing Studio course with the same professor to get extra help to improve my writing skills. In this class I have had the opportunity to work on my leadership skills. Every class time we split into groups and work on our writing skills and display what we have learned to the other groups. I have been able to lead since the first class of the year and because of this I have been able to better my leadership skills. I have noticed that I am usually always the person to take initiative. This is and will be very useful for my years to come in college when I have more chances of groupwork. I’ve realized that leadership is an extremely important skill to have throughout college and even throughout life. It is something that can really be used in the work place in the future. That is why this is such a great opportunity for me to work on these skills.

            Once I began to walk around at the major’s fair I had a general idea of where I wanted to go and who I would want to talk to. I started at the education booth because that is what I am currently planning on majoring in. After that I decided to head over to the business booth. This is what Iwould like to consider my backup right now. Business has always interested me, and I think it would maybe be something I would enjoy if I decided to go into the marketing area of it.

            The first conversation I had was with the lady who oversees the education program. She did a great job of explaining to us that to get accepted into the actual education program we would have to go through a checklist process to make sure if we are eligible to be accepted. We were told that if we covered each thing on that checklist that we would more than likely be accepted into the program which was extremely reassuring to myself. The business booth was extremely busy, so it was a little more difficult to follow what the man had been talking about. The one thing I did get out of listening was that I think if I did go into business I would want to put an emphasis on marketing. That seemed to spark my attention the most out of all of the other categories.

            Overall, I think that the majors fair did a great job informing me of different things and topics that had not been addressed with me before. It also really opened my eyes to the business field more and sparked my interest quite a bit more. Now that I have attended this I may choose to take more business-oriented classes next semester to get a feel and see if I truly would be interested in this or not. 

            Throughout this semester I have been able to learn quite a bit of things about myself that I had not known before. Being a freshman incollege has really helped me find myself in a way. Going into school I knew that there were going to be a lot of challenges, but I never knew that I would become so stressed so quickly and easily. During this time of stressfulness, I have learned a lot of things that I will get into further on in the paper.Overall, I believe that a huge reason I have been so successful during this first semester of college is all because of how I was in GPS.

            After looking through my past journal prompts, some of my first assignments from the year, and all the notes I have taken, I can see improvement. Something that I have observed is that I have began to find better and more efficient ways to take notes, a better strategy on how to engagemyself in class, and most importantly, I have become a lot more relaxed about class participation. All these things were very important and stuck out to me because they were sometimes things that I would struggle with in high school. I’ve noticed great amounts of growth in myself, especially in those certain areas.This has also helped me mature in a way I believe. It is so important to watch and notice the areas that you are improving in so that you can notice and observe a change in yourself.

            Some evidence of these changes that I have, is in some of my first journal prompts I would talk about how it was hard for me to understand some of my professors and the notes they would put on the board and what they would generally talk about. I have found that over time I have developed in a way where I have a better understanding in general. This was good for me to realize. Because of this I do so much better in those certain classes because now I know what to be listening for and observing. This is all obvious evidence to me that I have been able to find areas to improve and strengthen over the span of the semester.

            Something that I am the proudest of myself for throughout this semester is how much I have been able to work on communication. This is something that I have always wanted to improve because it is so important for the future to have strong skills to interact with others. I have also been ableto work on talking in class and participation. Both of those are things that will be useful for me down the road. Overall, I am extremely proud of myself for the improvement that I have had with communication towards others, as well as in the classroom. Again, I believe that the Comedy Central Civics class and Comm Sci class have been such a huge help for this. Without those classes I would probably not be as strong in those areas as I am now. This would certainly be the thing that I am most proud of myself for. I have always been decently outgoing but always shy in the classroom. I have gained a lot of confidence in myself which will allow me to be able to express myself more inthe classroom from now on.

            Something I am most excited about for next semester is having a new schedule. I have really enjoyed my schedule so far, but it feels like a good time for a change. I’m excited for new challenges that will bring me more growth and experience. Taking classes such as Sociology, Psychology and Human Biology are all classes that will expand my horizons and help me learn more skills that will help me down the road.

            Each of these aspects of the classes I am in now, including the seminar, have deeply improved many skills as well as broadening them. Just as I said earlier, improving my communication is something that I am the proudest about. Looking forward I am thrilled and very excited for my next semester. It will give me a lot of time to learn more about myself and hopefully strengthen areas that need it most. Deepening my communication skills has already been a huge help for me. It was so cool to observe the changes in myself over only one single semester. It is crazy to think about where I might be 3.5 years from now as far as change goes. Great changes have been made within myself over this semester and I’m excited for the growth that is to come.

High Impact Experience

Fall Semester First Year: First Year Seminar

1)    What will you do in the experience?

1. Within my first-year seminar I hope to gain more knowledge of how to communicate, work with others and express my opinion. This is an experience that I will be able to carry with me for the rest of my college years and my life. Throughout this first semester it is safe for me to say that I have gained each of these things.

2)    How will it benefit your purposeful exploration, personal, professional and/or civic growth?

1. This will be extremely beneficial because it is something that I can carry with myself during meetings, job interviews, and the rest of my schooling. This will improve my skills and expand the things that I know and have learned within the university.

 

Spring Semester First Year:

1)    What are the requirements/prerequisites? What is your plan to gain access?

1. This semester I plan to get involved in a possible organization. I have waited to do that until my first semester was over so that I would have a chance to settle in. I am interested in the outdoors club. I plan to gain access by talking to the leader in which I have the email of.

2)    What will you do in the experience?

1. I will experience many different things, meet new people, and explore the nature of beauty more. This will open my eyes more and hopefully help me gain more friendships that I will cherish.

3)    How will it benefit your purposeful exploration, personal, professional and/or civic growth?

1. This will be very beneficial because it will give me an opportunity to connect with people who have similar interests as me, as well as growing personally. It will help with my communication skills towards others.

 

POSSIBLE Spring Semester First Year:

1)    What are the requirements/prerequisites? What is your plan to gain access?

1. Another thing that I am possibly interested in is a communications internship. I find this interesting because I have always been intrigued by the communications field and that would open a lot of doors for me. In order to find more out about this internship, I would email or call Danielle Bina.

2)    What will you do in the experience?

1. I would experience and learn more about the entirety of majoring in communications. I would also learn the ins and the outs of the classes that should be taken if I would decide I wanted to major in communications.

3)    How will it benefit your purposeful exploration, personal, professional and/or civic growth?

1. This would be SO beneficial to me, especially because I am still unsure of whether I would like to major in education. This would allow me to explore more about myself also.

 

 

Fall Semester Second Year:

1)    What are the requirements/prerequisites? What is your plan to gain access?

3. Another internship that I found and was interested in was psychology. This is something that has recently been catching my eye quite a bit. Some prerequisites are having at least a 3.0 GPA and declaring a major in psychology. This would be if I decided to take this route.

2)    What will you do in the experience?

1. In this experience I will be placed somewhere within Green Bay where I can put my psychology skills to the test.

3)    How will it benefit your purposeful exploration, personal, professional and/or civic growth?

1. This will help me grow within that field and help me learn how to lead and guide others who may be in need.

 

POSSIBLE Fall Semester Second Year:

1)    What are the requirements/prerequisites? What is your plan to gain access?

3. An education internship is also something I am quite interested in. This sparks my interest because that is currently what I plan to major in. Again, a 3.0 GPA is needed as well as a major in education.

2)    What will you do in the experience?

1. In this internship I would have a chance to learn more within the classroom and learn more about kids and their different backgrounds.

3)    How will it benefit your purposeful exploration, personal, professional and/or civic growth?

1. This would be beneficial because it would give me a better understanding of if I would be able to see myself becoming a teacher or not.

 

Spring Semester Second Year:

1)    What are the requirements/prerequisites? What is your plan to gain access?

1. Another club that I am interested in is the psychology club. Because Sophie is involved, I would be able to talk to her and get a better understanding if this is something, I would actually want to be involved in.

2)    What will you do in the experience?

1. When involved in this you can oversee many different events and different things to raise money for the club itself.

3)    How will it benefit your purposeful exploration, personal, professional and/or civic growth?

1. This would be beneficial for me to see if I would possibly desire to minor in psychology which is something I have been debating lately.

 

POSSIBLE Spring Semester Second Year:

1)    What are the requirements/prerequisites? What is your plan to gain access?

1. Becoming a teacher’s assistant is something else I am interested in. In order to do so you must be majoring in that specific subject.

2)    What will you do in the experience?

1. This would test my teaching skills and would allow me to help other students that may have questions about what they are learning.

3)    How will it benefit your purposeful exploration, personal, professional and/or civic growth?

1. This would be very beneficial if I chose to major in education because it would be getting one foot in the door.
