NACE Skill: Leadership

Class: Comm Sci

In Comm Sci during the second semester we devoted all our time to creating a service project to better the community’s campus. I decided to step up and be a leader for this project. This is my first time taking a leadership position on a big project like this. So far it has taught me responsibility and how to listen to others in a way that makes them feel supported and heard. This is an important thing to experience before heading into the workforce because before I put myself into this position I didn’t think of myself as a leader and now I have come to realize that I enjoy it. I don’t enjoy it because it lets me be in control of everything, I enjoy it because it gives me the opportunity to see the best in other people and put their strongest attributes to work. If I had not decided to do this I think that I would not have experienced the positives things that can come along with being a leader. I am glad I got to experience this opportunity, and am excited to use it moving forward.

NACE Skill: Career Management

Class: EDU 208

In my education class we are given the opportunity to have field experience during our second semester. This has given me to further develop skills as a possible educator one day. It allows me to engage with students in an academic setting and help them with homework, or things that they are currently learning in school. I am glad this class is also teaching me different ways to communicate with kids, because no two kids are exactly the same. By learning many different ways to interact with kids it allows me to utilize and practice learned skills in my field placement. In class we discuss ways to shape ourselves professionally, which one day will help us get a job and be a successful educator. I always knew I wanted to work with kids and by having experiences like this, it has only shown me that it really is something that I am good at. Classes like this are important for all future career goals that college students are facing.

Majors Reflection

Majors Reflection

Which majors, minors, or emphasis did you learn about at Majors Fair?

At the majors fair I went to the Communications booth as well as the Education booth.  They are both majors and minors that you can get here and I found them both to be interesting.

What did you learn about through your conversations with advisors and the information that you received?

I learned that there are many areas that you can pursue in communications that are very different so you can always find interest in something.  Some that interested me were Social Media Strategy, Public Relations, and Mass Media. At the Education booth I found the path that I would take if I wanted to pursue what I came here for which is teaching little kids grades K-4. I would get my Elementary Education certification to get a major and minor in education. I could even get a minor in communication to go along with my Education major.

As a result of this experience, are there any majors, minors or emphases you’d now like to explore further? Why or why not? Make sure that your response here reflects purposeful exploration.

I was already exploring education, and plan to explore communications a little bit more. I feel the the mix of them both would set me apart from other educators who are looking for jobs.

NACE Skill: Teamwork/collaboration

Class: Comm Sci

Reflection:

In Comm Sci, we did a brainstorming project where we worked with our classmates to come up community service project ideas. This was a good way of demonstrating teamwork and collaboration because we built off of each others ideas and shared our own ideas. By doing this we learned how to effectively work together to come up with something greater than we would have on our own. We also became more comfortable with sharing our ideas with each other. By coming up with these ideas as a team we will be able to work better as a team when it comes to the service project itself. Teamwork is important to develop stronger relationships and it creates better work in the long run. I am glad that we are able in incorporate teamwork into this class because it makes completing tasks faster, and creates a stronger work ethic in the class. Everyone can benefit from developing skills that are derived from working as a team, such as being able to communicate more effectively.

NACE Skill: Written Communications

Class: English Comp

Reflection:

In English Comp, we were assigned an assignment to communicate a problem from a separate source of writing and argue it. This assignment allowed me to learn how to effectively argue a point with no bias. It also taught me how to review information in a more professional way. It is important to learn how to communicate effectively because it will lead to our abilities in the future that will eventually open or close doors for us. I will know how to reflect on important issues without bias, which will make my communication more effective and valid. Being able to analyze information is important too. This allows you to reflect on it. Very important skills were derived from this assignment which will help me in a workplace environment. If i have to write a written report on something for my job in the future, I will be ready.

NACE Skill: Work Ethic

Class: Human Bio

Reflection:

This class has increased my work ethic because it has been one of the most challenging classes that I have ever taken. All of the work that goes into the class from quizes, to study session attendance and exams has ended up developing my punctuality on work. It has also led me to develop skills on how I get things done in the most efficient way possible. It taught me how to effectively memorize information. I also learned how to use every assignment to my advantage to do better on the exams, increasing my work ethic as the course goes on. Work ethic is probably one of the most important skills that jobs are looking for. This class itself has taught me how to effectively complete large amounts of work in a sufficient amount of time. I will be able to handle a large workload efficiently because of this class.
