- Written Communication: ENG COMP 105
In this course, I wrote a paper on how lookism is a very important problem in our society; especially through pageantry. This paper was very difficult to write about since a lot of people have different views on the problem, but writing it also allowed me to understand how pageantry can make people have self-esteem issues. After writing this paper, I got the opportunity to have my peers edit and evaluate my work with feedback on what they liked and what I could improve on. After I got my review sheets back, I understood the things that should’ve been fixed to make my paper more concise and easier to understand. The paper was also supposed to be written in APA format which I am not familiar with whatsoever. This paper made me both a better writer and helped me understand the way I should be writing in APA format. It also gave me feedback on how I should be writing my papers and how I could improve on it as well. 2. Career Management: BIOLOGY 201 Since I want to be a biology major and a veterinarian, this class has helped me a lot with understanding biology on a molecular and cellular level. After speaking about what I want to do after college, my professor gave me some insight on what colleges I can go to in order to become a veterinarian. Through taking this class, I learned that it is hard to get into the veterinary services because there isn’t a high demand for people to take this job right now. Instead, I have started to become really interested in forensic science and that currently has a high demand. I’m thinking about switching my emphasis. I’m not 100% sure yet, but I am going to continue to talk to him about my thoughts. This class has also really helped me realize how much work will be going into this field. I am having better study habits and things are making more sense to me as well. 3. Global/Intercultural Fluency: FNS 225 In my First Nations Studies class, I am currently learning more about my culture and their beliefs. Also, about my clan (the bear clan) and how the bear clan was created along with their specific duties within a tribe. I have a lot more respect and understanding for my tribe and how the world used to be. How they were treated is unfair and is very embarrassing that we treated them this way. We are also required to speak with native elders to learn their backgrounds and learn about where they come from as well. This has increased my respect towards the people of my tribe and the people in my family as well. I have also realized that I have both views in a native way and European way on our world. I grew up taking care of as much of the environment as I could (conserving it) and making it better then what it was before. I am glad to have this skill in life for the better on my country and family. 4. Critical Thinking/Problem Solving: MATH 101 I recently have just started my math class and to be honest, it is challenging so far. There is a lot of problem solving in a logistical fashion. I started out being very bad at the math and decided that I needed to do something in order to get help. I have recently just problem solved this problem by studying with other people in my class. They have been patient with me to help me understand the concepts and work that go into each individual problem. Thing are making more sense now, but I am continuing to get help on the things that don’t make sense to me. Working through the questions and following the rules along in my notes helps me a lot to memorize these rules and gets me ready for the test as well. As I have just recently taken my first exam, there was a lot of things that I couldn’t remember of how to do and it was a very hard exam for me. For next time, I will do a better job at organizing my priorities and be more critical on how I will spend my time studying. 5. Professionalism/Work Ethic: GPS Seminar This semester, we are doing a service project that has a lot of individual and group work. I have become very punctual when meeting up for group meetings, helping my peers with website design ideas, and getting ideas together for the upcoming events as well. We have learned who the accountable people within the group are as well as those who aren’t as accountable. Each person also has their own job to do for the groups and this gives us all a lot of responsibility to raise money and gain toys for the children’s hospital. I feel very accomplished that things are starting to come together better than before and we are almost ready to start our first bake sale. Getting ready for the bake sale took a lot of organization and time management skills. These are very important to have in the work place because without organization and time management, no one would be able to get things completed. People also wouldn’t be on the same page with tasks and other things. I am glad we have started to act more professional about our jobs and how we are going to accomplish these tasks. |
