Fall Semester First Year: First Year Seminar
What did you do in experience?
- As a freshman, the first-year seminar helped me to adjust to campus and college life.
How did it benefit your purposeful exploration, personal, professional and/or civic growth?
- The first-year seminar helped me to have a smooth transition from high school to college and get used to college as soon as possible. I got the opportunity to get to know where everything is, join clubs/ any extracurricular activities, build my communication skills, and have connection with people on campus.
Spring Semester First Year: Somali Student Union Chairman/President
What are the requirements/prerequisites? What is your plan to gain access?
- The requirements to become president of SSU are having good attendance, good communication skills, time management skills, being creative, and the group members voting for me.
What will you do in the experience?
- In this experience I would suggest big projects that we could all work towards to until the end of the semester and taking small steps to achieve our goal. I would make sure it is place where the group members support each other academically and professionally.
How will it benefit your purposeful exploration, personal, professional and/or civic growth?
- This experience would improve my communication skills. It would show me how responsible I can be. It would be a practice of how I need to be in a professional place and managing my time with everything else that is going on in my life.
POSSIBLE Spring Semester First Year: Phi Eta Segma (First-Year Students)
What are the requirements/prerequisites? What is your plan to gain access?
- Requirements are 3.5 GPA in first or second semester of first year.
What will you do in the experience?
- I will be doing service learning/ volunteering with other students. I will be able to build my communication and team work skills.
How will it benefit your purposeful exploration, personal, professional and/or civic growth?
- This will encourage to always keep my GPA up. This experience will help me professionally when I am applying for grad school or jobs.
Fall Semester Second Year: Study Abroad Program
What are the requirements/prerequisites? What is your plan to gain access?
- Things I need to do beforehand, first being a sophomore standing is recommended. Second apply for scholarships/grants. Finally complete an advising agreement from my advisor and fill out CISI Insurance policy.
What will you do in the experience?
- In this experience I will be able to help others and make a big change into their lives. As a former refugee, I always thought of going back to Africa and doing anything that I can do to help make their lives even 1% better, especially countries where people are can’t afford eating three times a day.
How will it benefit your purposeful exploration, personal, professional and/or civic growth?
- This experience will help me to see the world from different perspectives. It will also help me explore different cultures and traditions.
POSSIBLE Fall Semester Second Year: TA (Teaching Assistant)
What are the requirements/prerequisites? What is your plan to gain access?
- To become a TA, I must be majoring in the specific area. I need to have a cumulative GPA of 2.5.
What will you do in the experience?
- I will help student hear the materials from a different perspective. I will be there in the classroom to answer any question that the students have.
How will it benefit your purposeful exploration, personal, professional and/or civic growth?
- This experience will help me build my communication skill and work with other people. It will also help me to gain new perspective on education in the process.
Spring Semester Second Year: Internship Shadowing of Healthcare Professional
What are the requirements/prerequisites? What is your plan to gain access?
- Talk to a Human Biology faculty. My plan is to talk to my Human Bio advisor about it
What will you do in the experience?
- I will be watching what a professional doctor or any other person in the field that I want to go to in the future daily job/work looks like.
How will it benefit your purposeful exploration, personal, professional and/or civic growth?
- This experience will help my personal growth to have an idea of what I want to do looks like before it is too late. I will have the opportunity to gain useful resource as I begin to seek and apply for jobs/internships.
POSSIBLE Spring Semester Second Year: Undergraduate Research
What are the requirements/prerequisites? What is your plan to gain access?
- Talk to the faculty members of the area I want do undergrad research on. I am planning on talking to my Chemistry Professor about it.
What will you do in the experience?
- I will be doing an independent work with a professor. I will be writing a paper about my conclusion and it will something that no one has ever done before.
How will it benefit your purposeful exploration, personal, professional and/or civic growth?
- It will help learn how to work independently. This experience will help me professionally when I am applying for grad school or jobs.
