People, Places, and Me

NACE Skills Checklist

SKILL: Oral/Written Communication

ASSIGNMENT:

FYS- Paper 1 Compared to Paper 2

REFLECTION:

In this course I had to write two different papers. I wrote one on the anarchistic theory of time and the other on fatalism, determinism and compatibilism and my views on them. I bring up both papers because in the first paper there were flaws in presentation and tense. I used these comments and edits to that paper to help me develop the skills and awareness for the second paper. The comments I was given helped me better express the ideas of the topic with proper grammar, voice and tone. I was also better able to shape my argument and logically explain how I came to my conclusion. This also motivated me to deeply edit my paper to make sure it was clearly written and understandable. By doing paper one I was able to enrich my writing skills, and write a clear, well organized paper.

SKILL: Professionalism/Work Ethic

ASSIGNMENT:

COMM SCI 145 – Time Management Assignment

REFLECTION:

As apart of the course I had to monitor my time management skills in order to improve my usage of time. For this assignment, I planned out for three days what I was going to do throughout the day. As the days came, I had to write out what I had actually done during the day. At the end of the week I took the two and compared them to see how I use my time. I am a very busy person and as I viewed I saw that I use my time effectively in the time I have available. This assignment helped me to make sure that I can get what I need to get done, done on time. This also allowed me to see when I actually had free time and how I could better use it, in order to help me later with my workload. In the end this assignment helped me better recognize what needs to be done and when, which improved my work ethic, and how I can alleviate stress.

SKILL: Critical Thinking/ Problem Solving

ASSIGNMENT:

PHILOS 105-Discussion/ Reading on Rawls

REFLECTION:

In this class, there is a reading that needs to be done every week for class so you are aware of what the professor is lecturing about and helps form your opinion of the topic ahead of time. As I read one of the chapters on the natural lottery and John Rawls, I understood that we all have things that are just given to us without us even having to do anything. In class I listened to the lecture and other people’s opinions and how they influenced my own. Once I organized my thoughts on paper, I stated my opinion on religion and how it is similar to the natural lottery and some may argue that god has a plan for us which causes the natural lottery. These kinds of readings have helped me better understand and create my opinion ahead of time. This also allows for me to consider all of the outcomes of an argument and interpret how I can make my point better that theirs. This skill can also help me in other classes and my day to day life by taking a situation and analyzing it to better overcome whatever it is. This skill is something that is necessary for my everyday life as things can always arise where problem solving and critical thinking are needed.

SKILL:
Leadership

ASSIGNMENT: GPS: Service Project

REFLECTION:

In this course we are focusing on doing a service project for the community. As of now we have come to the idea of helping with donations for different areas on the UWGB campus. For this project I have been tasked to be a group leader. This includes taking notes, organizing meetings, leading conversations and keeping on task. This is helpful for me as in future classes I will need to do group work, and if people need it I have the skills to take charge and deal with a group effectively. In the future, this will help in my career as I may deal with many issues or people at a time. It will help me be able to plan things out and think about the bigger picture of what is going on. I will be able to use this leadership skill to help me further myself in the field I will be in, by adding to conversations and keeping things in th direction they need to be in

SKILL: Digital Technology

ASSIGNMENT: COMM SCI 205: SPSS Programs

REFLECTION:

Within this course we use different programs for labs and data collection. In specifics we use a program called SPSS. This program helps us enter in data, and do calculations without having to do extensive math. We have done different studies that help us learn to navigate the program and figure out how to read the data. This program has helped me learn how to navigate programs like SPSS, such as spreadsheet, excel and other similar programs. It has also shown me how to gather data that is accurate and precise. This is beneficial to me as in the future in my classes or in my job I will need to use programs that take data and analyse it. In my future, it will be good to put on a resume that I know how to use programs like these because many professions look for those kinds of skills.
