NACE Skills Reflection

NACE SKILL COURSE
Critical Thinking Chem 211/213
REFLECTION
In chemistry, there are some very difficult topics to understand.  Every week, there are discussion problems to complete in order to understand each chapter.  These problems are hard, yet they help tremendously.  In order to understand the calculations in chemistry, the student also needs to understand the theories behind the laws.  These topics are hard to understand, but it is very rewarding to do well on an exam.  Every week, there is a lab that coincides with the topics learned in class that week.  Before coming to lab, the student needs to complete a prelab assignment, which includes the introduction, the procedure, and the data tables needed for lab that week.  Then, once in lab, the student needs to perform the experiment.  Due at the beginning of lab each week is the lab report.  The student completes the necessary lab calculations, sometimes a graph, and the analysis/discussion, which is a long, typed document explaining how to do the lab, the results of the lab, and errors that changed the data.
Written Communication First Year Seminar
Being able to write a paper that makes sense is crucial to doing well in college and in life.  A person can show their abilities of writing with intelligent language and unique ideas on a complex topic.  This helps a person show that they are able to think well about difficult topics.  Communication is an extremely important skill for potential employees to have.  Every person communicates in everyday life.  Without being able to communicate with writing, a person cannot effectively convey ideas.  Effective writing is a skill that shows through applications and resumes as well.  Writing emails is an important skill for anybody to have, which is another skill that I learned in FYS and Comm Sci 145.
Leadership Intro to Women and Gender Studies
Intro to Women and Gender Studies is a discussion-based course.  Every student is expected to participate in daily discussions about the material read in preparation for class.  Each student must sign up for “on-call” twice in the semester.  This means that the student is well-prepared for the class and they understand the material.  If there is a question asked that nobody else answers, the students on-call should be able to answer the question.  Being on call means you should read the material and take thorough notes to be well-prepared.  This shows leadership because well-prepared students are able to answer difficult questions that demand well-thought-out answers.
